These places called Pension

Would somebody please explain what is meant when an accommodation is called %26quot;Pension%26quot;

Generally smaller than a hotel. Doesn%26#39;t always mean though that pensions cannot claim stars as a hotel; some pensions have stars but keep calling themselves pensions as they want to be more intimate
