please recommend how best to map out this trip to cover all these destinations. Where to begin? how many nights for each city? Will travel by train (originate in US)
Many thanks for the help!

Obviously depends on where you fly in (although it appears from the above that you are somehow catching a train across the Atlantic), but you may find flying into Vienna the most central.
I would go to Budapest first (no more than 2 nights) and then take the train direct to Prague (takes 6 hours). 3 nights minimum in Prague. Take train back to Vienna for a few days and then go to Salzburg (2 days maximum, unless you want to stay by the lakes and take in some of the mountains - St Gilgen or Fuschl are 30 minutes by really efficient bus service from Salzburg and are much cheaper than staying in Salzburg itself.
For Vienna, allow one less day than in Prague, but beware it is much more expensive.
Why are you going to Hallstadt?

Hi,If staying in Salzburg I recommend Hotel/pension Sallerhof in Grodig. Its 20 minutes by local bus outside of Salzburg and faces the untersburg mountain. Its a wonderful little village. Check it out.

Dear Peb7
thank you for the recommendations
this is all very helpful
we chose hallstadt based on Rick Steeves travel guide book which we use for all our trips
you mentioned other lake towns which sound very interesting (better than Hallstadt?...we like to hike, bike ride and picnic....)
many thanks for your advice

Fuschl and St Gilgen are better than Hallstadt.
Fuschl has a few hotels only and is full of campers, but you can walk the whole way round the lake Fuschl which gives you a good achievement - cycle paths as well.
St Gilgen, just down the road from Fuschl (and the Wolfgangsee) is bigger and you can hike and cycle. St Wolfgang itself is full of tourists, but you can walk to it in an hour or so and catch the bus back (or cycle if you want). Train up the is good (and it has breathtaking views) and you can walk back.
And to cap it all, buses run from both to Salzburg at least hourly and it takes 30 to 40 minutes or so to the centre. You can therefore %26quot;do%26quot; Salzburg as much as you want, but not pay Salzburg prices and have some lovely fresh air by staying in the mountains and by the lake at the same time.
