First time visitor to Prague

My wife and i have booked 4 days at Hotel Julian in July on recomendations from this forum. And would like advice on getting from airport to hotel and also some good pubs and restaurants

Julian is about 20 minutes walk to the castle area and 30 minutes walk to the old town. You can get there much quicker by tram (especially up to the castle) and so would recommend you buy a 7 day tram ticket (they only do 3 or 7 day tram tickets) at the Prague Transport Authority offices at the airport when you arrive. Cost is 280 crowns or 7 pounds each.

Two good restaurants about 10 minutes walk nearby on Vitezna street; Cafe Savoy and Olympia are next door to eachother. Cantina further down the street on Ujezd is an excellent mexican if you like that kind of thing, but you need to book.

Taxi from the airport should cost you no more than 650 crowns

Don%26#39;t get taxis anywhere, totally rip you off the moment they hear you speak.

Just came back after a weekend away and from the same area in town our group were charged anything from 160 CK to 2000 CK then threated if they complained.

Don%26#39;t get them trams were excellent though.

agree with taxis in the centre, but the offical taxis from the airport are on fixed charges from the airport to the city and apart from the drivers driving like maniacs are safe as far as ripping people off.

You can also ask the hotel julian how much it would cost them to arrange a transfer from the airport

Like yourselves,we stayed for 4 days last year as %26quot;1st timers%26quot;.It is a city you can do as much or as little as you please.A good website to look on is %26quot;wguides%26quot;,thats where we found some good restaurants %26amp; pubs in their suggestions, with approx prices and details of nearest metro stops etc.For a magnificent view over Prague, take a ride on the funicular railway up Petrin hill, over Charles bridge to Mala Strana then turn left along a main road, about 10 mins walk.We also took a train to Tabor,a small town about 60 miles south of Prague, just to see what rural life was like.It too has an Old town with some fascinating underground tunnels which there is an hourly tour of.There was enough there for a day trip and the rail trip was so cheap.Back in Prague we spent one evening on a river trip along the Vltava,it lasted about 3 hours complete with a live jazz band,if thats your taste in music,a meal was included but drinks were extra. We booked it at the quayside kiosk, not from the numerous street sellers who pester you in the area.I won%26#39;t bore you with anymore info but will welcome any questions you may have.Peb7 is the expert for detailed knowledge.Sorry one other thing to bear in mind, avoid the Irish bars unless you are desperate for home cooking %26amp; british/irish beer, they are really expensive!Enjoy your break.

DavieH - we are also booked the Hotel Julian. The limo service they offer is a little more (700K), but they are waiting for you when you arrive. The thought of a driver holding a card with my name on it makes me have peaceful thoughts - especially after a 14 hour trip! If only it was going to be that easy/inexpensive on our next stop, Venice.
