Prague by rail from Amsterdam

Need help on a first time visit to Europe. We are flying to Amsterdam and would like to visit Prague next by rail - having a tough time determining the type of pass needed for this. We are continuing on to Salzburg, Venice, Rome. Is there a separate pass from the Eurail that is needed for Czech Republic/Austria? Any advice for the general route I%26#39;ve planned? Thanks for any help ...

Eurail should be applicable to Czech Republic and Austria. Quickest way with least changes to get to Prague from Amsterdam is by changing at Berlin. If you leave Amsterdam at 7.13, you can be in Prague at 18.41.

You need though to check if your Eurail card is valid on German and Italian Inter City ICE trains or on the new Pendolino trains in the Czech Republic.

Prague to Salzburg is tortuous by train. Better to go via either Munich or Vienna

The standard Eurail pass only includes the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

You will need a different rail pass for the Czech Republic: either the European East Pass or the Austria/Czech Republic Pass. Details are on www.raileurope.com.

Czech trains are still very reasonably priced, so it may not be necessary to buy a pass. I have purchased tickets from Prague to the border, then activated my Eurail pass. I am not sure if you can do the reverse.

I would agree with Peb that the best route from Amsterdam to Prague is via Berlin. The best daytime connection leaves at 7:13 and arrives at 18:27. There are no easy night trains, so I would stay away from that idea.

Your trip to Salzburg will be easier if you add Vienna to your itinerary.

Is it there a good night connection from Amsterdam to Prague?

go to www.idos.cz

Says 19.07 Amsterdam to Frankfurt, arriving Frankfurt 23.00 and then 23.38 Frankfurt to Prague, arriving Prague next morning at 08.15

Thank you peb. You%26#39;re always there. Fast, accurate, no nonsense...

Thank you.

Why should Prague-Salzburg via Ceske Budejovice-Linz be tortouos by train?

You have several possibilities, one direct train in the evening (6h 21mins), one in the morning (with changing trains at Linz, travel time 6h 04mins) and several connections with express trains during the day (2 changes).

Have a look at http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en
