My fiancée and I are flying out to Prague for 5 nights next Wednesday and staying at the Andels Hotel. We have arranged transport from the hotel through Prague experience (which I gather now may have been an unnecessary expense). Thing is we both have no clue about Prague itself, and have left it to the last minute to find out! I have no idea what to do, where to go and what to see in Prague. Any help, ideas or recommendations about days out would come greatly appreciated. Also it’s my 31st birthday on the 26th , any ideas on what I can do (it’s a Sunday). Oh and lastly money, how much will we need in which currency (just a rough guess for 2 people for 5 nights, meals out ect..)oh, and there%26#39;s more...transport (bus? tram? tickets?)

if you haven%26#39;t a clue, buy a guidebook either before you fly out or at the airport. The background reading and an idea of what is where will more than recoup the cost of lost time. Good guidebooks will also answer most of the other questions that you have

Prague lonely planet is a a good buy. Streetwise map is good because its laminated, the pop map is good for the metro stops.
Keep an eye on the weather forecast before you go and if still as cold pack lots of layers and waterproof boots/shoes.

what you will find is that without public transport, andels is a bit too far to keep walking to everything every day. You can buy a 7 day public transport ticket for only 280 crowns (7 pounds) at the Prague Transport Authority office in the arrivals hall at the airport when you have come through customs. Trams and metro from nearby the hotel can take you to the city centre and the castle district easily.

Currency is often easier to get in the UK, especially if you pay for the option that they buy back unused currency for no commission at the rate they sold it to you.
Lots of snow at the moment and temperature is not above zero. Whether that will be the same next week, don%26#39;t know, but the streets are very mucky in winter, so don%26#39;t bring shoes or trousers you don%26#39;t want to mess up. You also need some good grips on your soles, so as not to slip over on the streets

We really liked the Best of Prague guide by Lonely Planet. The pop up maps were great and the walking tours were a good place to start. We did buy another Prague book once we were in Prague but that was more for the great pictures in the book. It would have been to big to carry around. Just plan on walking everywhere, everything is very close to eachother. It was very cold when we were there end of Nov. Sure it is very cold now. The people and food are amazing. I am sure you have read about pickpockets. No joke watch out in Prague. You will have a great time, wish we were returning soon.

I am also taking my wife for a suprise birthday trip to Prague at the Hotel Constans, we also travel next wednesday from Manchester.
Regarding money, travel agents told me you can use ATM%26#39;s but you have to be careful they can charge you quite a bit for using them. I have decided to take cash.
It sounds like its quite cold out there at the moment so plenty of fleeces and thick socks will need to be packed.

Prague%26#39;s wonderful - I expect you%26#39;ll enjoy it where-ever you go. Personally I like the Lonely Planet guides, the maps are good and their descriptions of restaurants are normally spot on.
You will get the best rate buying Czech crowns from an ATM, when we were there last summer there was no charge by the Czech banks but watch out for your own bank in the UK; they can add on 2-3 percent - same when using a credit card. If you are going to be travelling a lot get a Nationwide credit and debit card, they don%26#39;t charge anything for foriegn currency transactions!
